90% of our machines can run Vista now. We happened to be doing our desktop refresh last fall. We purchased appropriate hardware for Vista. We're upgrading our older laptops in June. We run a four year lifecycle on our desktop machines and a three year on our laptops. We won't be on Vista until late 2008.

So why are you upgrading to Vista? Not to mention the point of the original post had nothing to do with if they would run or not, it's about the additional investment required to support an new OS with no additional functionality. Lots of cost, no gain. Vista will take more memory and processing power. My guess is most of your firm laptops are made obsolete by an "upgrade" to Vista. How are you justifying the expense?

You are wrong. What standard piece of software common to law firms won't run in Vista, but does run in XP? The answer is none. If you happen to find software that requires XP, you can run that software in compatibility mode. Not hard to do and I haven't had to do this yet with any of our software. I work for a fairly large firm with more than 10 offices.
